About Us

The Band’s History

In 1972, under the direction of Graham Parkin, a teacher at Alvaston Junior School, a community band was established made up of parents and children from the school, along with guest players. Over time, and as families moved on, the band lost its association with the school and relocated to Wilmorton College under the name Alvaston Concert Band. This gave rise to a partnership with the previous musical director, Martyn Ford. Later, the band moved from Wilmorton College, to begin rehearsing at St Benedict Catholic School and it was here that, growing in stature, it changed its name to the Derby Concert Band.

About the Band

The band, now very experienced, plays at many local venues and is known for its continued vibrancy and diversity. Having spent several years rehearsing at Derby Moor School and over a decade at the now closed Derby Engineers Club on Osmaston Road, the band now rehearse at The Royal British Legion in Allestree.

We are completely self-supporting and have our own committee which raises finances through modest monthly subscriptions, alongside revenue from concert performances.

The type of music played by The Derby Concert Band is selected to suit all tastes, and includes traditional band ensemble music, film, television and theatre themes, classical repertoire and big band jazz, which produces an exciting blend for the discerning listener.

Membership currently stands at around 50 players of all age ranges. The band is very rich in abilities and experience, including school students, players with professional backgrounds and those with vocational interests. New players are always welcome to add their expertise to an already flourishing organisation.

The band constantly seeks out new and challenging material, allowing us to play highly entertaining, yet sophisticated music. Our aim is to entertain to a high standard in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
